“The Holier it Gets” documents the journey taken by four adult siblings into the Indian Himalayas to disperse their father’s ashes at the source of the Ganges river. The pilgrimage is an unlikely one, because although their father was born a Hindu in India, he rejected his past while studying in England in the 1950s, married a Londoner and moved to Canada. In discovering both India and his past, the siblings learn a great deal about their family’s origin and themselves. “The Holier It Gets” takes a ravishing, if voyeuristic, gaze on both India and their father’s past and juxtaposes travel narrative with home movies and personal reminiscence.
